    Selena Quintanilla Perez, dite Selena, née le 16 avril 1971 à Lake Jackson au Texas et morte le 31 mars 1995 à Corpus Christi au Texas, est une chanteuse américaine d'origine mexicaine, qui a été surnommée la « reine » de la musique tex-mex.

    Elle est considérée comme l'une des figures les plus importantes de la musique latine avec plus de soixante millions d'albums vendus à travers le monde et elle est la troisième latine avec le plus de disques vendus seulement après Gloria Estefan et Shakira. Elle a été nommée « l'artiste latine la plus influente et de plus grandes ventes des années 90 » par Billboard, pour avoir été la seule artiste féminine à avoir cinq albums simultanément sur le classement Billboard 200 des États-Unis.

    Cadette d’un couple de mexicains immigrés, elle enregistre son premier album à l’âge de douze ans. Elle reçoit en 1987 le prix de l'Interprète féminine de l'année (Female Vocalist of the Year) aux Tejano Music Awards (en), et signe un contrat d’enregistrement avec EMI quelques années plus tard. Sa renommée continue de grandir au début des années 1990, en particulier dans les pays hispaniques. Son album Selena Live! remporte le Grammy Award du Best Mexican-American album (meilleur album mexicain-américain) en 1993 et son album Amor Prohibido est nommé pour un autre Grammy l’année suivante.

    Épouse du guitariste Chris Perez, Selena est assassinée à l’âge de 23 ans par Yolanda Saldívar, la présidente de son fan club. Le 12 avril 1995, deux semaines après sa mort, George W. Bush, alors gouverneur du Texas, proclame la journée du 16 avril, son jour de naissance, « Selena Day » au Texas. Sa vie romanesque et surtout sa fin tragique ont donné lieu en 1997 à un film dans lequel Jennifer Lopez lui redonne vie. En juin 2006, un musée et une statue de bronze appelée Mirador de la Flor sont inaugurés en sa mémoire à Corpus Christi.  

     

    Née à Lake Jackson au Texas, Selena est la benjamine d'Abraham et Marcela Quintanilla, tous les deux Américains d’origine mexicaine. Elle commence à chanter à l’âge de six ans. À neuf ans, elle chante dans le groupe Selena y Los Dinos que son père a créé. Le groupe fait ses premiers pas dans le restaurant de la famille Quintanilla (le Papagallos), mais le restaurant ferme peu après.

    La famille Quintanilla se retrouve rapidement sans argent et est expulsée de sa maison. Ils s’établissent à Corpus Christi, dans le sud du Texas. Ils jouent partout où ils peuvent : aux coins des rues, aux mariages, dans les quinceañeras, dans les foires, etc. Leurs efforts finissent par payer en 1984, quand Selena, alors âgée de douze ans, enregistre son premier album (Selena y Los Dinos) dans un studio d’enregistrement local. L’album n'est pas vendu en magasin et son père achète toutes les copies originales. Cet album est ressorti en 1995, sous le titre Mis Primeras Grabaciones.

    Selena est bonne élève, mais sa renommée augmentant, les voyages nécessaires à sa carrière commencent à interférer avec ses études. Son père la retire de l’école alors qu’elle est en eight grade (équivalent de la quatrième en France) et elle continue son éducation sur la route. À l’âge de 17 ans, elle obtient un diplôme de The American School of Correspondence (École américaine par correspondance) de Chicago, et est acceptée à l’université d'État de Louisiane. Elle sort son deuxième album, Alpha, en 1986.

    Au début de l’année 1995, la famille Quintanilla découvre que Yolanda Saldívar, présidente du fan-club de Selena et directrice de ses boutiques, détourne une partie des revenus des boutiques. Ils décident de la licencier. Peu de temps après, Selena accepte de rencontrer Saldívar, afin de récupérer des documents pour des déclarations d’impôts.

    Le rendez-vous est fixé le matin du 31 mars 1995 dans un hôtel Days Inn, à Corpus Christi. Dans le motel, Selena demande les documents manquants. Saldívar retarde la remise des papiers, prétendant avoir été violée à Mexico. Selena conduit Saldívar à l’hôpital local, où les médecins ne trouvent aucune trace de viol. Saldívar retourne au motel, Selena demande à nouveau les documents manquants.

    Une dispute éclate, Saldívar sort un pistolet de son sac à main, le pointant dans un premier temps sur sa propre tête, puis vise Selena. Alors que Selena quitte la pièce, Saldívar lui tire une première fois dans le dos. Selena court jusqu’à l’accueil de l’hôtel dans le but de trouver de l’aide, tandis que Saldívar la pourchasse et l'insulte. Avant de s’effondrer sur le sol, Selena désigne Saldívar comme sa meurtrière et le numéro de chambre de l’hôtel où elle a été abattue. Elle meurt à l’hôpital local à 13 h 5, à l’âge de 23 ans, seize jours avant son 24e anniversaire.

    Ses cendres ont été dispersées dans la baie de Corpus Christi.

    Wife of guitarist Chris Perez, Selena was murdered at the age of 23 by Yolanda Saldívar, the president of her fan club. April 12, 1995, two weeks after her death, George W. Bush, then governor of Texas, declared the day of April 16, his birthday, "Selena Day" in Texas. Her romantic life and especially his tragic death gave rise in 1997 to a film in which Jennifer Lopez revives him. In June 2006, a museum and a bronze statue called Mirador de la Flor are opened in his memory in Corpus Christi.

At nine, she sang in the group Selena y Los Dinos that his father created. The group made its first steps in the family's restaurant Quintanilla (the Papagallos) but shortly after the restaurant closes.

    The Quintanilla family quickly finds himself without money and is evicted from her house. They settled in Corpus Christi, southern Texas. They play wherever they can: at street corners, weddings, quinceañeras in, fairs, etc. Their efforts eventually paid in 1984, when Selena, then twelve years old, recorded her first album (Selena y Los Dinos) in a local recording studio. The album is not sold in stores and her father bought all the original copies. This album came out in 1995 under the title Mis Primeras Grabaciones.

Saldívar delayed the presentation of papers, claiming to have been raped in Mexico. Selena drove Saldívar to a local hospital, where doctors find no trace of rape. Saldívar returned to the motel, Selena reiterates the missing documents.
    A fight broke out, Saldívar out a gun from her purse, pointing it at first on his own head, then aimed Selena. While Selena leaves the room, Saldívar shot him once in the back. Selena runs to the home of the hotel in order to find help, while the Saldívar chasing and insult. Before collapsing on the floor, Selena refers Saldívar as her murderous and room number of the hotel where she was shot. She died at the local hospital at 13 pm 5 at the age of 23, sixteen days before his 24th birthday.
    His ashes were scattered in the Corpus Christi Bay.
